AT 409: Field Report Week 8
Aaron Varnau, Treston Russell, Tristan Bungen
Crew 3 Martell Flight Report for 10/13/20: Crew 3 started by meeting at NISW around 9:30 am. We packed up the M600 and made sure everything was in the case. We followed the updated packing checklist. We gathered up 3 sets of batteries, plus a spare in the M600 case. These batteries were blue, pink, yellow, and tan. We made sure all SD cards were cleared of any previous data, and then placed in their respective devices. We secured the M600, the battery case, the PPK, the zenmuse, and the flight pad. We loaded all supplies into Treston’s car and drove together to Martell Forest.
Our mission was the same as previous weeks, to fly the Northwest and Northeast plots of the Martell Forest. As we were running through the checklists, we noticed the props were loose and the grey lines on the bolts were not aligned properly. When tightening the bolts, we noticed that one of the bolts between batteries 5 and 6 was stripped. We tightened the bolts enough to not over tighten them, and continued with the mission. Our first flight of the day was conducted on the NW plot with the blue set of batteries. The M600 took off at 10:16 a.m., and landed at 10:34 a.m.. The mission was ended early due to the batteries reaching the preset failsafe. The mission only collected 263 photos, and still had two legs of the mission left.
The second flight was also of the NW plot to make up for the previous flight being ended early. This time we used the yellow set of batteries, and the mission was successful. The M600 took off at 10:43 a.m. and landed at 11:04 a.m. with 336 photos taken.
The third and final flight of the day was of the NE plot of Martell Forest. The aircraft took off at 11:11 a.m. and landed at 11:34 a.m. with the pink batteries. This flight, like the first flight, ended early due to the batteries reaching the preset failsafe, and returned home with one leg left of the mission. The difference between this flight and the first flight is that the NE plot flight path has an extra leg of overlapping, so we didn’t need to redo the flight. We collected 468 out of 519 photos. We were instructed by TAs not to resume the flight, and that what we collected was enough to process.
After the flight was done and the data was collected. Tristan went to the computer lab and started sorting out data for processing. All photos and PPK data was removed from the SD cards and placed in the appropriate folders. The bin file was taken from the PPK and placed in EZ Surv. I did the autoprocessing, corrections were made, and the .txt file and images were inserted. They matched up perfectly for both data sets and all the data was finished being processed. Meta data was written for each flight and data was saved properly for future Pix4d processing.
